At the end of 2022, several protest actions at universities were organised (e.g. Austria-wide general staff assemblies, action days and demonstrations) addressing inflation-driven budget shortages as well as inadequacies of employment relationships at Austrian universities. The "Netzwerk Unterbau Wissenschaft" (NUWiss) was particularly active in this regard, pointing out the problems of precariously employed university staff and demanding improvements in employment relationships (e.g. ending long sequences of fixed-term contracts, amendment or abolishment of § 109 Universities Act, higher proportion of permanent employment relationships among academic staff). NUWiss has now proclaimed March 2023 as “month of action” and is organizing several events on the topic of "Fair instead of precarious: rethinking university" in the coming weeks. On March 17 at 4 pm there will be an online information meeting in English on Austrian university employment legislation. Particularly, we would like to promote the demonstration organised by NUWiss taking place on March 23, 2023. Meeting point is 2 pm at the main building of the University of Vienna. The planned route starts there and continues via the Ministry of Science to TU Vienna. There, a final rally will take place in Resselpark (Karlsplatz). We hope for a high participation of WU employees to prop up the demands for the improvement of employment conditions at Austrian universities!
