Scholarship program for international students

New students enrolled at WU thanks to the Mondi International Scholarships

Over 50% of the students in WU’s English-taught programs are international, hailing from countries around the world. It’s important to WU to make sure this opportunity is also open to international students whose socioeconomic background might otherwise prevent it: Which is why the Mondi International Scholarships will be available starting this fall.

The start of the 2021/22 academic year is also the start of a new scholarship program at WU: the Mondi International Scholarships. This financial aid program is made possible with the generous support of the Mondi Group, one of WU’s long-time corporate partners. In the academic years 2021/22 and 2022/23, Mondi will be covering the costs of seven scholarships per year to be awarded to socially or financially disadvantaged, high-potential international students, allowing them to come to WU to attend a master’s program.

Financial reasons should not be an obstacle to studying

At least four of the seven scholarships will be awarded to women. Each scholarship student will receive financial support for a maximum of two years to complete a master’s program at WU. “The main idea for WU is that financial reasons should not prevent students from gaining international experience. Thanks to the support of our corporate partner, we can now help students from abroad complete their degree at WU. I am particularly pleased that several of the scholarships are reserved for female students, which is a commendable step in the advancement of women," said WU Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger.

Frauke Bastians, Diversity and Inclusion Senior Manager at Mondi, says, “Access to education is an important aspect of inclusion. As we see it, a lack of financial resources should not keep young people from studying. Mondi is a globally active company that employs people from almost 100 countries. By 2030, we also want to increase the percentage of women at all levels from 21% today to at least 30%. This means that four out of ten new hires will be women.” In the 2021/22 academic year, six women and one man were able to enroll in a WU master’s program thanks to the Mondi International Scholarships.
