Public Transport
Subway, busses and tramways in Vienna
In Vienna, public transport is operated by Wiener Linien. There are subways, tramways, busses and night busses.
The subway system in Vienna consists of five lines: U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6. Additionally, line U5 will enter into function in 2026.
The numbers of bus lines are usually followed by an 'A' (for example, 13A), and the direction of the bus is indicated by the name of the final stop posted on the bus.
During the week, subways, tramways and busses start circulating at about 5.00 am and stop running between midnight and 1.00 am. On weekends and on nights before public holidays, the subway lines are available all night, at 15-minutes intervals.
On weekdays, after the subway stops circulating, night busses start operating throughout the city at 30-minute intervals (night busses have an 'N' before their number).
Students up to 26 years of age can purchase the so-called semester ticket, which costs only 75 €. Students need to purchase one ticket per semester. There is also a cheaper monthly ticket option for the summer months. For more information on ticket fares, please go to the website of Wiener Linien.
To buy a student ticket (both semester tickets and summer tickets), bring your student ID card and the application form, which is available at ticket sales offices and which you can fill out there. Tickets can also be bought online here, or on the app "WienMobil".
