Health insurance

As an international student, you need to have health insurance coverage for the entire duration of your stay in Austria.

If you are an EU citizen, or a citizen of Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland (EEA), you need to have the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). You can find more information here.
If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you need to attach proof of insurance when applying for a residence permit. You can opt for the student insurance (Studierendenselbstversicherung) of the Austrian national health insurance carrier (ÖGK). You can find more information here (in German).
You can also opt for private insurance, but note that the insurance needs to be recognised by the residence authorities as a "health insurance covering all risks". The private insurance company will need to provide you with a written statement confirming that your insurance fulfils this requirement. You can find more information here.

General practitioners

Please refer to general practictioners for routine medical check-ups or physical exams. Before consulting any doctor, make sure that they have a contract with your insurance provider. In order to do so, you can either ask if your insurance provider is accepted by making a call for your appointment, or you can have a look at the website Docfinder. This website is also very useful when looking for an English-speaking doctor.

Pharmacies

The opening hours of all Austrian pharmacies can be found here, and night service is available during the night and on weekends.
