13/04/2026

Jan Mendling is returning to WU as a professor.

As of April 2026, Jan Mendling takes up a permanent professorship of information systems and operations management at WU Vienna, where he previously served as professor of process management and information systems from 2011 to 2021.

Following a move to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2021, Jan Mendling maintained close ties to WU Vienna and went on to assume a temporary part-time professorship at WU in 2022. With the permanent professorship he is now taking up, Jan Mendling resumes his long-standing collaboration with WU’s Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, this time with a long-term perspective.

High-level international research and close ties to WU

After completing a degree in business information systems in Trier and Antwerp, Jan Mendling worked as a research and teaching associate at WU Vienna, where he obtained his PhD in 2007. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, as well as a junior professor of information systems at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he was appointed Einstein Professor of Process Science at the Department of Computer Science in 2021. He is also a principal investigator at the Weizenbaum Institute and co-founder of Noreia Intelligence GmbH.

Jan Mendling’s research interests revolve around business process management, process mining, and information systems. He is one of the leading international researchers in his field – a field he has helped to define through his work.
