Travelling by train

Sustainability is one of WU's core principles, and students travelling to Vienna from European countries are strongly encouraged to do so by train, as this is the most enviromentally friendly option.

On the ÖBB website (Austrian Railway Service) you can check train connections to Vienna and book your ticket.

You can select your arrival station based on which one is closer to your appartment in Vienna. The two main train stations in Vienna are:

• Wien Hauptbahnhof (Wien Hbf) - Vienna Central Train Station

• Wien Meidling

Both stations are connected to different subway lines (U-Bahn), urban railway lines (S-Bahn) and tramways.

Travelling by plane

If you decide to travel to Vienna by plane, you can either land at Vienna International Airport in Schwechat (Flughafen Wien) or in Bratislava.

Vienna International Airport

The Vienna International Airport is located outside the city of Vienna, and you have different options to reach the city centre.

S-Bahn S7 (Urban railway)

Price: ca. € 5 (one way ticket)

Time to reach Vienna: ca. 25 min

The S7 leaves every 20 minutes from the airport. You can find the stations that can be reached by taking the S7 here.
You can purchase your ticket on the website of the ÖBB (Austrian Railway Service), on the app Wien Mobil, or at the ticket machines at the airport.

Regional Express Trains (REX)

Price: ca. € 5

Time to reach Vienna: ca. 25 min

You can use the website of the ÖBB to book your ticket for any regional train that also travels to and within the city of Vienna. You can purchase the ticket on the ÖBB website or at the ticket machines at the airport.

City Airport Train (CAT)

Price: ca. € 15 (one-way ticket)

Time to reach Vienna: ca. 15 min

The CAT leaves every half hour from the airport to the city centre. This train only travels from the airport to the subway station Wien Mitte/Landstraße (this station has two names, they are used interchangeably) and retour.

You can purchase a CAT-ticket online, here, or at the ticket machines at the airport. Make sure to select Wien Mitte/Landstraße as your destination.

Bus - Vienna Airport Lines

The busses of Vienna Airport Lines connect the Vienna International Airport and the city center via four lines. You can find additional information about routes, timetables and prices here.

From Bratislava Airport

Bratislava Airport is located 65km from the center of Vienna. The bus connection Bratislava - Vienna can be looked up at the websites of different private companies. For further information, please visit the website of Bratislava Airport. The trip takes approximately 90 minutes.
