Title: ‘An Isthmus Joining Two Great Continents’?

Abstract: The talk offers [yet another] extended reflection on the state of our field.  It begins with some generalisations about publication patterns and then focuses on selected areas in which the contribution of cliometrics has been notable or controversial.  These include ‘natural experiments’ to test the fetal origins hypothesis; secular wage trends in England; high wages and the Industrial Revolution; and the deep origins of present-day institutions.  I conclude with some autobiographical thoughts on how economic history is produced and on the challenges of interdisciplinarity.
