Position at IIB, other positions and academic career

Jonas Puck is Full Professor at the WU Vienna University of Economics and Business and was the founding Head of WU’s Institute for International Business. In addition, he is Academic Director of the MBA in Energy Management at the WU Executive Academy and Co-Director of WU’s Research Initiative in Sports and Management. Previously he held the position of Academic Director of WU's CEMS program and was Head of the Department of Global Business and Trade. Jonas Puck also is a Past-President and currently acts as the elected Vice-Chair of the European International Business Academy. Further, he is the co-founder and co-owner of intior GmbH, a consulting business focusing on internationalization strategies and international market analyses for SME, co-initiator of the Austrian Business Case Competition, and Vice-President of the First Vienna Football Club.

Before joining WU he held positions at Nuremberg University, Germany, the University of New South Wales, Australia, the University of International Business and Education, China and the Bradford University School of Management, UK. Since being at WU, he taught or held visiting positons at the University of Southern California (USA), New York University (USA), UC Berkeley (USA), Rice University (USA), Ural Federal University (Russia), St Petersburg State University (Russia), National Economics University (Vietnam), Tsinghua University (China), and Tongji University (China), among others. He earned a Dipl.-Kfm., a PhD in International Management and a postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) from Nuremberg University.

Jonas is an experienced teacher and consultant and has provided consulting solutions, research expertise, or executive education for numerous firms of different size and industries, including ABB, AT Kearney, Biogena, BMW, BP, Coca Cola Hellenic, DocLX, ERBE, EY, FESTO, L’Oreal, LEONI, OPEC, OMV, Porr, Post AG, Schlumberger, Schüco, Siemens, Shell, Speedinvest Priates, SPIDI, ThyssenKrupp, UNIDO, Verbund. Voith, and many others. He received awards for outstanding teaching as well as outstanding research, e.g. the CEMS Best International Business Project Award 2015, multiple awards for innovative and excellent teaching at WU Vienna, EIBA Fellows Research Award 2008, Ludwig Erhard Award 2008, Schoeller Fellow Award 2009, Festo Fellow Award 2010, the Temple/AIB Best Paper Award 2019, the distinguished paper award from the Academy of Management STR Division 2019, and Best Paper/Best Reviewer Awards from a large number of journals and conferences.

Research interest

His current research interests lie in the overlaps of global strategy, finance, and political science, often with an industry focus on energy and extractive industries. Jonas serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Business Policy, Journal of World Business, International Business Review, Long Range Planning, European Management Journal, and the Multinational Business Review. His research has been published in journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business, Long Range Planning, Management International Review, and Human Resource Management (US), among others. In addition, he is editor or author of six books and numerous book chapters.
