Virtual Mini Symposium

We live in turbulent times that hardly seem predictable and cannot be considered as an immediate projection of the past. As a result, management should not be practiced as a mechanical, linear, and calculative endeavor (Bachmann et al., 2018; Sison and Ferrero, 2015). However, despite the advances of the knowledge-based economy, organizations seek the necessary capabilities to act in such a VUCA world in thoughtful and purposeful ways (e.g., leadership, value-based and future-oriented decision making, weighing in the common good) (Cuguero-Escofet and Rosanas, 2020). To this end, knowledge management (KM) can become key to building the necessary capabilities, skills, and knowledge that complement instrumental-calculative rationality (Johnson, 2020; Nonaka and Takeuchi, 2021).

The Knowledge Management Group at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria, in collaboration with the OCKO – Organizing Cognition in Knowing Organizations Research Group at the University of Vienna, Austria, has been hosting a Community of Practice on knowledge and learning. In this semester, we dedicate two evenings to the question of the future of KM in a VUCA world.

Mon, 25 April 2022, 4 – 6 p.m.       Non-Rationality and Spirituality in KM

Thu, 28 April 2022, 4 – 6 p.m.        Responsibility and Sustainability in KM

(all times are CEST)

The intention of this virtual mini symposium is to share perspectives, capture ideas, and spark the discussion on value-based perspectives on KM (e.g., non-rational knowledge, phronesis, spirituality, and responsible knowledge management).

Distinguished academics will share their thoughts on the future journey of KM and present their research. Two short presentations per evening should propel the subsequent discussion that is framed by a triggering question. We invite scholars and practitioners alike to join and engage in the discussion.

To further and deepen the discussion and ideas, we invite participants to submit to the following conferences where we will host dedicated minitracks:
