WU Campus

WU Open Access Publication Fund

WU has established a central Publication Fund to help WU-affiliated authors cover Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Open Access publications in academic journals.

Eligibility criteria

The following criteria must be met to receive funding from the WU Publication Fund:

  1. The applicant is

    • a WU employee under a true employment contract,

    • a civil servant assigned to WU,

    • or a retired full professor or professor emeritus/emerita,

  2. The applicant is the corresponding author of the publication in question.

  3. The publication is an academic journal article that meets the following quality criteria

    1. Publications in an Open Access journal („Gold Road“):

    2. Publications in subscription journals („Hybrid Road“):

      • The medium in question is a peer-reviewed academic journal.

      • The journal is listed on Web of Science or Scopus.

      • If your article is - in whole or in part - the result of an FWF-funded project, the respective journal must be part of a transformative agreement (which applies to all of WU’s agreements)

  4. If your publication is the result of an FWF-funded project, please state this in the final comment field or contact open-access@wu.ac.at directly.

  5. The Open Access publication is subject to a Creative Commons license. If your publication is the result of an FWF-funded project, please select the CC-BY license.

  6. The funding available is distributed on a first come, first served basis. Funding cannot be reserved for a later point in time, requested retroactively, or be provided to cover fees that have already been paid.

  7. Funding from the WU Publication Fund may only be used for covering Article Processing Charges (APCs). No funding can be provided for covering other or additional expenses, for instance color printing charges

  8.

The funding awarded to a publication is limited to a maximum of EUR 2,000. The amount awarded depends on the applicable Article Processing Charge (APC). If the gross total APC exceeds the EUR 2,000 limit, a maximum amount of EUR 2,000 per article can be obtained from the WU Publication Fund. In this case, the applicant needs to submit an email indicating the cost center or internal account no. that will cover the rest of the charges. (see also the section on the awarding process below).

Awarding process

  • Please submit your application online using the application form.

  • The University Library’s Open Access team will tell you if your publication is eligible for funding from the WU Publication Fund. If your application is accepted, you will receive further information on how to manage the payment of the invoice.

  • If your application is accepted and the amount applied for does not exceed EUR 2,000, the Article Processing Charge is paid in full by the WU Publication Fund.

  • If your application is accepted and the total Article Processing Charge exceeds EUR 2,000, the WU Publication Fund contributes EUR 2,000 to the total charge. In this case, the applicant has to submit an email indicating the cost center or internal account no. that will cover the rest of the charge.

  • The University Library will carry out all the steps required for processing the invoice. In case of a split payment, the University Library will carry out all the required steps for charging the remainder of the charges to the WU cost center or internal account no. indicated by the applicant.

  • Your article is published Open Access under a Creative Commons license. If your article is the result of an FWF-funded project, please select the CC-BY license.
