We’re excited to welcome Fulbright Scholar Clint Peinhardt to the Institute for International Political Economy at WU Vienna!

By Jonas Bunte

We are pleased to welcome Clint Peinhardt to the Institute for International Political Economy as a Fulbright Scholar. Clint joins us from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he is Professor of Political Science. He received his PhD from the University of Michigan and works in the field of international political economy, with a particular focus on foreign direct investment (FDI), investment agreements, and political risk. His research examines how governments design economic policies and how firms respond to political and legal institutions. Clint is also strongly committed to teaching and has received several major teaching awards during his career.

During his stay at WU, Clint will teach two courses in the Advanced and Applied Sustainable Economics programs. Political Economy of Multinational Corporations explores the role of multinational enterprises (MNCs) as key actors in the global economy. The course examines why firms invest abroad, how they interact with host governments, and how their activities shape domestic policy, development, and regulation. Drawing on research from economics, political science, management, and law, students analyze both firms' motivations and the broader political and social consequences of multinational activity. In Political Economy of Trade, Clint introduces students to the academic study of how politics and economics intersect in international trade. The course reviews core theories explaining who gains and who loses from trade, how trade policies are formed, and why governments sometimes retreat from economic integration. Particular attention is given to contemporary developments such as trade conflicts and the political backlash against globalization.

Clint’s research spans several interconnected themes within international political economy. His publications address the design and effects of bilateral investment treaties, the credibility of government commitments, political risk insurance, and the institutional frameworks governing international investment disputes. He has also examined how domestic policies influence investment patterns and how environmental and regulatory provisions operate within trade and investment agreements. Across this work, a central concern is how political and legal institutions shape economic behavior and outcomes.

At WU, Clint looks forward to engaging with students and colleagues working on related questions in international political economy. Visiting appointments provide a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, compare perspectives across academic systems, and develop new collaborations.

We are very happy to welcome him to the Institute and to the WU community!
