Out-of-office notifications inform people who send you emails that you cannot read your emails at the moment and tell them when you will be available again.

Our recommendation

Use WU Webmail or set up your WU email account on your mobile device or in your email program. By accessing your WU email inbox, you will receive important information regarding your studies at WU Vienna.
 

Two rules for email forwarding

• Microsoft operates Microsoft 365*, a cloud service that provides WU students with, among other things, their own email inbox. By default, Microsoft does not support forwarding from this inbox to personal email addresses.

• However, email policies at WU Vienna allow your Microsoft 365 account to forward messages to your personal address, and you can set up this forwarding yourself.

Known Issues

During cloud updates by Microsoft, there have been repeated instances where all set-up forwarding rules were suddenly deactivated in accordance with Microsoft’s specifications. As a result, thousands of emails were returned to the senders as “undeliverable.” This “glitch” (more precisely: an incorrect policy for the email service) can only be resolved by Microsoft itself.

Additionally, personal email inboxes often run out of space so that they can no longer receive new emails. As a result, forwarding fails.

Consequences: missed appointments, deadlines, or incurred fees

In certain cases, you may not receive emails at your personal address and may therefore miss important notifications! For example, you may miss

• notifications regarding exam registration,

• notifications regarding grades and access to transcripts,

• reminders, warnings, library return and payment confirmations, or

• library reservation confirmations.

You may not be able to respond in time to this messages. In case of missed book returns, unnecessary costs can quickly arise.
