Future of Tax

Tax policy and administration have evolved rapidly in the past few decades as a response to seismic changes in the global economy, global political economy, technological innovations, and the need to adapt to non-economic shocks such as the effects of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. For policy makers, these global trends and innovations are integrated into discussions of how to strengthen domestic resource mobilization on the ground as well as how to offer a tax system that is transparent, fair, and easy to navigate to ensure maximum compliance. The past two years in particular have demonstrated how challenging it is to policy makers to plan for even the medium term, given the ever fluid global environment.

The WU Global Tax Policy Center at the Institute for Austrian and International Law, WU Vienna, is investigating the future direction of tax systems – focusing on the current state of tax policy and administration, the factors that have led to this point, as well as the path forward.

Community of Practice

The WU GTPC launched a community of practice for tax experts to sustain the conversation and facilitate the sharing of ideas, research, projects, and practical experience related to the future direction of tax systems.

As a neutral space that encourages open exchange and welcomes contributions from diverse stakeholders – including academia, government, international organizations, think tanks, non-governmental institutions, and the private sector – the university is ideally suited to host a community of practice that includes thought from multiple perspectives.
