09.15-10.45 – Panel 1: Current and Future Implications of ESG on Taxation

This session will set the stage for the entire symposium by bringing together tax reporting and ESG considerations, advocating for a comprehensive and coherent approach that is holistically embedded within organizational structures. Despite increasing interest, there is still no clear consensus on the role of tax within the ESG framework. Accordingly, the session will explore and propose a meaningful placement for tax in this context. As reporting obligations continue to expand globally, taxpayers are increasingly required to implement robust systems for collecting, verifying, and validating both financial and non-financial data. Regulatory bodies and investors are encouraging the integration of tax governance into ESG models. In response, this session will examine how tax control frameworks can be aligned with evolving ESG reporting requirements.

11.15-12.45 – Panel 2: Tech-Driven ESG and Tax Policy

This session highlights the central role of technology in the integrated management of tax and ESG frameworks. As organizations face increasing demands to collect, process, and report vast volumes of both financial and non-financial data, technological infrastructure becomes essential for ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timeliness. The panel will explore how advanced technologies – such as artificial intelligence and blockchain – can enable more strategic, forward-looking approaches to tax governance within ESG models.

14.00-15.30 – Panel 3: Integration of ESG Metrics in Tax Reporting

Following the previous panel’s discussion on the role of technology, this session shifts the focus to the integration of ESG metrics into tax reporting. It will examine whether and to what extent ESG criteria are meaningfully reflected in tax disclosures. As technological tools evolve, multinational enterprises increasingly rely on ESG-related metrics to assess impacts, structure reports, unlock data for analysis, and generate actionable insights. This session will draw on a concrete use case to illustrate current practices and challenges, and will also include perspectives from transfer pricing documentation, exploring how ESG considerations are incorporated into its design and management.

16.15-17.45 – Panel 4: Use of Technological Tools for ESG Data Collection, Analysis and Tax Audits

Tax audits are a key part of any tax system, playing a crucial role in ensuring compliance and effective administration. This session will explore how ESG disclosures might affect the standards of evidence applied in tax audits and how the use of technological tools to integrate ESG data could challenge existing procedural safeguards and transparency. Another key question is whether the need to comply with ESG-related obligations could, on public interest grounds, justify a more expansive or technology-driven approach to tax audits. Alongside these issues, this session will serve as the symposium’s conclusion, drawing together the themes discussed throughout the day and offering broader reflections on the growing intersections of tax, ESG, and technology.

Registration

Participation fee

The participation fee for this event is EUR 750.-

A 10% "early bird discount" is applicable to registrations sent by June 30, 2025.

A waiver on the registration fee can be granted to applications from researchers exclusively employed by an academic institution. To apply, please submit a short letter of motivation including the relevance for your research, together with your CV and a list of recent publications to taxlawtechnologycenter@wu.ac.at.

The participation fee covers all materials, welcome reception, lunches, coffee breaks and refreshments. Costs of travel and accommodation are not included.

Payment

You will receive an invoice for the participation fee of EUR 750.- (or of EUR 675.- in case of the “early bird discount”). We kindly ask you to transfer your payment within three weeks from the date of the invoice.

Cancellation

Any notification of cancellation of registration must be sent in writing to taxlawtechnologycenter@wu.ac.at. In case of cancellation before August 20, 2025, the participation fee will be refunded. No refund can be made for cancellations received after this date.
