Life at the Institute: Team Traditions

At the Institute for International Political Economy, we make time to connect beyond the office.

Report by Ashley Simpson, MSc. Teaching and Research Associate

At the Institute for International Political Economy, we value excellence in research, teaching, and third-mission engagement. But our work doesn’t only take place in the office! Effective teamwork and mutual support are vital to achieving our goals.

To cultivate this collaborative spirit, we organize team-building events throughout the year. Past activities have included dinner on the Danube, visits to Christmas markets, an escape room challenge, and leisurely afternoons in Prater Park.

Continuing this tradition, we enjoyed a cozy get-together outside the office this June. On a sunny Friday afternoon, we shared cake and coffee at Vienna’s beautiful Ponykarussel Café, soaking up the sunlight on the outdoor terrace. Conversations ranged from favourite Austrian restaurants and cafés — such as the Schweizerhaus — to the best movies of the 1990s.

Most recently, our team embraced the festive spirit with an outing to the Prater Winter Market on the Riesenradplatz. We kicked off the afternoon with a quick round of Secret Santa, exchanging small gifts and holiday wishes. Afterwards, we headed into the market for a lively Christmas scavenger hunt, followed by drinks, conversations, and lots of laughter. A perfect way to celebrate the start of the holiday season together!

These gatherings are always a wonderful opportunity to connect beyond work and research, and to discover more about each other’s hobbies and personalities. They also play a key role in fostering a caring, enjoyable team culture.
