Politics of Special Economic Zones

Report by Sidan Raeskyesa, MSc. Teaching and Research Associate

In April 2025, I visited the United States for the second time, traveling to Chicago to present my latest research at the International Studies Association (ISA) Conference.

This time, I introduced a new paper on the political economy of special economic zones (SEZs), focusing on how domestic political structures—particularly decentralization—shape the decision-making processes behind SEZ expansion. This project highlights the often-overlooked role of internal governance in shaping economic zone policy.

While in Chicago, I also took the opportunity to catch up over coffee with my doctoral committee member, Prof. Sarah Bauerle-Danzman. I left our conversation inspired, and I’m grateful for her constructive feedback for my ongoing research on FDI.

Naturally, as a dedicated Transformers fan, I couldn’t leave the city without indulging in a bit of movie nostalgia. I visited the iconic Michigan Avenue Bridge featured in the Battle of Chicago scene—yes, the very spot where Optimus Prime defeats Sentinel and Megatron. To round off the day, I enjoyed a classic cheeseburger at the historic Billy Goat Tavern.
