The Research Institute for Economics of Aging was established in summer 2006. Its research focuses on the socio-economic living conditions of older people and on the economic challenges of an aging society.

New Projects:
In October 2025, LQK-Evalu, a collaborative project between the WU Institute for the Economics of Aging and Caritas der Erzdiozöse Wien, was launched.The project aims to evaluate the "Caritas Quality of Life Concept" (LQK) for long-term care.
In June 2025, VOLLfit, a collaborative project between the WU Institute for the Economics of Aging, the "Häuser zum Leben" (Houses for Living), MyBodyCoach, "Leben bewegen," and 4Brains GmbH, was launched. The project focuses on developing a fitness app for the residents of the Vienna-based "Häuser zum Leben."
In September 2024, AAL@HzL-VOLLsicher 2024, a collaborative project with the 'Häuser zum Leben' (Houses for Living), was launched to test a digital emergency call system in pilot houses.
In August 2024, ASCOT@NQZ, a collaborative project between the WU Institute for the Economics of Aging, Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, and the University of Kent (United Kingdom), was launched. The project focuses on developing an assessment tool to measure the quality of life in nursing and care homes, which will be utilized as part of the certification process under the National Quality Certificate (NQZ).
In September 2023, 24/7-Digital, an Austrian research and development project, was launched to develop, test, and evaluate an app for 24-hour care. March 2022 saw the launch of AAL@HzL, a Viennese collaborative project to test and evaluate new technologies for "Häuser zum Leben" (residential care).
In June 2021, "Care about Care" started, a European research and development project to promote digitization in long-term care. In May 2021, ASCOT-LL started, a project to develop a light-reading version for the German-language ASCOT survey instruments.

In November 2021, Birgit Trukeschitz and Assma Hajji received "WU Awards for Outstanding Research Achievement" for publications on the German-language version of ASCOT (Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit).
