SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation

STaR project assistant Katerina and WU student Violet, introduce us to SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, which focuses on providing water management and sanitation for all. While this goal is critical to environmental sustainability and underpins many of the other goals, it is one that has received minimal attention and action compared to other SDGs. To take our own small steps to further this goal, we can take shorter showers, turn off the tap when brushing our teeth, and always remember to bring a reusable water bottle.

Dr. Stephan Lutter, Research Associate in the Institute of Ecological Economics at WU and STaR Intellectual Community member, researches the quantification of resource use, focusing specifically on water. In doing so, he aims to help people around the world actually measure and, thereafter, reduce their water usage. He recommends that business leaders make themselves aware of the water usage involved in the whole supply chain, that policymakers analyze whether water abstraction is going up or down within their given country, and that individuals realize how each action they take has an influence on water availability.
