Workshop on Transformative Science (Oct 23)

02/10/2025

How can research challenge power structures, include diverse perspectives, and promote social justice?

October 23,  17:00-19.30

WU Vienna

In this workshop, we will explore the core ideas of transformative and transdisciplinary science, and how it can help shape livable, feminist futures.

Alongside fundamental discussions on the societal role of science and academic institutions, we want to reflect on structural constraints to transformative and transdisciplinary science, including care work of early career researchers. We then want to look at concrete examples of where transformative and transdisciplinary approaches are already implemented and how they can be included into our own work.

The workshop will offer ample space for discussion – on both the opportunities and challenges of transformative scholarship – and for reflecting on how we see our own roles as students and researchers in advancing a more just and caring economy and science.

The workshop is for Master’s students, early-career researchers and others interested in transformative science, sustainability and socio-ecological economics. We especially encourage people with a research focus on feminist economics to participate but are open to other topics as well.

Facilitators: Marco Kellhammer and Jan Freihardt, both active members of the association Wissenschaf(f)t Zukünfte e.V., which connects students and early-career researchers interested in transformative science. In 2021, they published the book Draußen ist es anders. Auf neuen Wegen zu einer Wissenschaft für den Wandel.

Organizers: WU SEEP-students Filipa Reis and Elisabeth Hartmann, with support from STaR.
