Science Communication in an Age of Complex Risk: Narratives, Climate Overshoot, and the Governance of Knowledge (24.03)

17/03/2026

Are you interested in exploring how you can better communicate your scientific findings to different audiences?

The institute for Data, Energy, and Sustainability warmly invite you to a guest talk by Prof. Lisa Palmer:

“Science Communication in an Age of Complex Risk: Narratives, Climate Overshoot, and the Governance of Knowledge”

Scientific evidence alone rarely drives policy decisions or public action. Instead, societies interpret complex risks through narratives that translate data, models, and uncertainty into meaning.

The seminar explores the evolving role of science communication. Drawing on research and reporting on climate and global environmental change, the talk examines how narratives shape public understanding, influence policy pathways, and circulate across journalism, scientific institutions, and digital platforms. It also highlights how scholars in information systems, AI, and governance can contribute to more resilient communication ecosystems.

When? Tuesday, 24 March 2026, 11:00–12:00
Where? WU Campus Room D5.1.003

Prof. Lisa Palmer is Journalist-in-Residence and Senior Research Scholar in science communication at IIASA. Her work focuses on the intersection of science, society, and global environmental challenges, including climate change, food security, biodiversity, and sustainability.
