Open Your Course 4 Climate Crisis

This annual O4CC week was organized by Fridays for Future. Read more. . .

The Fridays for Future project “Open Your Course 4 Climate Crisis” (OC4CC) took place for the second time this year. This specific week marked the 5th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. The research and efforts that led to this agreement stem from a clear scientific consensus. Yet five years later, adequate measures are still not being taken. On the contrary, several critical lines have been crossed in the past few months. For example, the Greenland ice sheet is melting, the permafrost is thawing and the fires in the Amazon could topple the ecosystem this year. If we're lucky, we'll have just under 7 years to reach the 1.5° C target.

The young activists at “Fridays for Future Austria” seek to make these issues heard and visible. As such, they have asked lecturers across the country's educational institutions to link their subject matter to the climate crisis during the last full week of November.

For lecturers, Fridays for Future team's website provides useful teaching materials: https://fridaysforfuture.at/OC4CC [site mostly in German].

For university students, here are some open-discussion questions that could be raised in a class discussion (any week!):

  • To what extent do you (classmates/lecturers) notice that the climate crisis is causing changes or rethinking in your field?

  • What/how can your discipline/field of study contribute to a transition to a sustainable society?

  • Which strategies/facts from the subject area of this course could serve in solving the climate crisis?
