New Paper Published: Design Principles for Long-Lived Circular Organization

13/03/2026

In their new article, Florentine Maier, Michael Meyer, and Hanna Schneider examine why some circular organizations persist over the long term

while others do not. The study analyzes 18 organizations with participatory decision-making structures such as Holacracy and Sociocracy and finds that Elinor Ostrom’s design principles for avoiding the tragedy of the commons also explain the longevity of circular organizational forms. The principles of monitoring, graduated sanctions, conflict resolution mechanisms, and the balance between individual contributions and rewards are particularly critical. Click here for the article.
