Pizza, Politics and (motion) Picture: Freedom Writers

16. Juni 2025

What could be better than pizza, a movie, and a political discussion?

On 10th April, the Institute for International Political Economy organised the 10th “Pizza, Politics, and (Motion) Picture” event. Over 25 students gathered to watch Freedom Writers and analyse the main messages from the movie in a thought-provoking discussion on politics, education and inequality.

Freedom Writers is a story about a determined teacher confronting systemic inequality in the U.S. Inspired by Anne Frank's diary, her students begin to write about their own experiences with exclusion, violence, and discrimination.

After the movie, Sidan Raeskyesa, organiser of the PPP series of events, led a lively discussion where participants with diverse backgrounds explored big questions in relation to the themes from the movie, such as:

  • Should we be concerned about inequality?

  • Can education bridge the gap, or does it sometimes make it worse?

The energy in the room was inspiring – and students were asking thoughtful, honest, and deeply curious questions.

Thanks to everyone who came! We can’t wait to see you at the next one.
