IPE@WU Careers: Brian Portelli

27. Oktober 2025

Our latest guest, Brian Portelli, works in UNIDO’s Sustainable Investments and Responsible Business Unit in Vienna.

One of the primary questions and concerns we receive from students is, "What career path can I pursue with a background in IPE?"

We attempt to guide students through this challenging decision by offering as many resources as possible, including our IPE@WU Careers series, where we interview people with exciting jobs in the field of IPE.

Our most recent interviewee was Mr. Brian Portelli, a Senior Advisor at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), based in Vienna. Brian works in the Sustainable Investments and Responsible Business Unit, part of UNIDO’s Directorate for SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation. In this role, he focuses on technical cooperation programmes in the areas of investment promotion and foreign direct investment (FDI) facilitation. Currently, he leads a program supporting African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries in developing policies that strengthen productive capabilities and value chains.

Brian generously shared his professional journey and answered numerous questions from our students. He described the many rewarding aspects of his work, from the global relationships and networks he has built to the personal and professional growth that comes from combining academic knowledge with hands-on experience. For those curious about pursuing careers in international organizations, Brian also provided tips on identifying a career path and applying for internships within UNIDO.

One of the most fulfilling parts of his role, Brian explained, is witnessing gradual, long-term improvements for the communities his programmes serve. He also offered valuable insights into how governments can attract more foreign direct investment and leverage it for sustainable development.

Several students raised challenging questions about the current global economic system, its role in perpetuating inequality, and the resulting frustration and uncertainty many feel. Brian acknowledged these concerns, while also pointing to the opportunities that exist for shaping better economic structures in the future. In particular, he emphasized the growing importance of studying politics and economics together to understand the complex forces at play and to design effective solutions.

It was both insightful and encouraging to hear from Brian, who addressed students’ doubts with realism while also offering a sense of possibility. We are grateful to him for taking the time to share his expertise, experiences, and thoughtful perspective with us.
