About this lecture

What do parents pass on to their children and can harmful patterns be broken? Drawing on large-scale administrative data from Europe and the United States, Emily Nix examines how violence and norms persists across generations. The research documents striking links between fathers’ violence, sons’ later perpetration, and daughters’ exposure to violence. Evidence from multiple research strategies demonstrate the lasting importance of exposure to positive versus negative male role models in sons' later outcomes. The findings highlight the importance of childhood environments and learned behaviors, revealing opportunities for policy to prevent violence across generations.
