FWF, for the first time, has approved “Zukunftskollegs” at Austrian research centers.

Among the seven by the FWF funded projects (out of 58 submitted) is one of the WU, with a funding volume of € 1.5 mio for a term of 4 years. The colleges were selected on the basis of international expert reports, the essential criteria of scientific originality and innovation, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation of the team.

The coordinator of this WU college "High-dimensional statistical learning: New methods for advance economic and sustainability policies" is Gregor Kastner (Institute for Statistics and Mathematics).

Together with researchers from the Economic Research Institute WIFO, the Paris Lodron, the University of Salzburg, and TU Wien, the team focuses on developing and applying innovative methods for the analysis of high-dimensional datasets. The reason for this is the rapid increase of the availability of large amounts of data in recent years. These are often too large, too complex, or too weakly structured to be analyzed by existing data-processing techniques.
