Aleksandar Arandjelovic received his doctorate sub auspiciis

18/03/2026

On March 11, 2026, the ceremonial graduation of six TUW graduates took place in the domed hall of the TU Vienna, followed by the presentation of the honorary rings of the Republic of Austria by the Federal President on March 18, 2026 in the Hofburg.

Aleksandar Arandjelovic was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences sub auspiciis.

Dissertation: Theory of neural networks with applications in finance, insurance and climate-economy modeling
Supervisors: Pavel Shevchenko (Macquarie University) and Uwe Schmock (TU Vienna) Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation

Aleksandar studied financial and actuarial mathematics at TU Wien. He wrote his dissertation "Theory of Neural Networks with Applications in Finance, Insurance and Climate-Economy Modeling" as part of a cotutelle, a binational doctoral program in which doctoral students write their dissertation under the joint supervision of supervisors at two universities in different countries, at TU Wien and Macquarie University. In his dissertation, he investigated the mathematical foundations of neural networks and developed applications for issues in financial and actuarial mathematics as well as in climate economics modeling. The focus is on the question of how modern AI methods can be used in such a way that they are not only practically efficient, but also mathematically sound and comprehensible. The aim is to better model complex risks and enable more informed decisions in finance, insurance and the analysis of climate-related developments.

Aleksandar started at the Institute for Statistics and Mathematics in March 2024. Arandjelovic is currently on a research stay at ETH Zurich (postdoc).

Congratulations!
