Winter Semester 2023 / Caritas

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

As societies evolve, so do the challenges and opportunities faced by social enterprises in the digital age. Caritas, a globally recognized social enterprise, aims to leverage innovation to enhance its extensive network and drive sustainable social impact. This project centers on providing strategic recommendations to enhance the probability of scaling social innovations effectively. Acknowledging the crucial role of social innovation in addressing complex societal challenges, the focus is on developing actionable insights to facilitate the widespread adoption and impact of innovative solutions.

Goal

The objective of the project is to give strategic recommendations to Caritas on scaling social innovations. The project intends to address the issues of scaling innovations across borders in Caritas’s decentralized global network. In particular, the project will help Caritas to investigate the development of an innovation or scaling agency. This agency would act as a consortium for international Caritas subsidiaries. The main goals are improving international cooperation, definition of common problems and finding solutions adequate for different needs within the Caritas network. This project aims to help Caritas find and adopt innovative ideas and develop efficient processes for successful innovation scaling within its organizational system. Ultimately, the goal is to pave the way for a transformative and impactful future for Caritas, aligning with its commitment to social welfare and development.

Methodology

This research on social scaling agencies employed a two-phase methodology: initial secondary research to establish foundational knowledge and identify gaps, followed by eight expert interviews with representatives from diverse organizations. The interviews, guided by a comprehensive framework, sought insights into various approaches to social innovation and scaling. The combination of literature review and interviews ensures a well-rounded understanding, laying the groundwork for informed recommendations in the subsequent stages of the research.

Results

The interviews reveal a common theme - successful innovation and social entrepreneurship demand embracing diversity, fostering collaboration, and adapting to change. Practical engagement, networking, and experience sharing are emphasized, along with the nuanced challenges of implementation. Key elements include decentralized exchanges, tailored solutions, and comprehensive impact measurement. The collective wisdom from professionals underscores the importance of understanding contexts, effective management strategies, and a commitment to continuous learning.
