Navigating New Horizons: Bridging Competency Gaps for Sustainable Growth

04/08/2024

Summer Semester 2024 / Zero2One

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Our client zero2one emerged as a spin-off from the NSB Group, a globally operating ship management company from Buxtehude with a growing network of internationally operating subsidiaries, offering a series of services in the maritime and adjacent sector. Our client was tasked with helping the group expand and diversify its business operations through establishing new ventures and spin-offs in new industries, to expand the partner network.

Goal

The main goal of the project was to set up a comprehensive competency framework, to effectively manage existing competencies, bridge competency gaps, and enable corporate venturing with the help of internal capabilities. In this regard, the aim was exploring the transferability of core competencies beyond the maritime sector to identify new markets, leverage existing competencies and extend the client’s current business activities into new industries.

Methodology

Our methodology mainly consisted of two parts – the Status Quo Analysis and the Best Practice Analysis. For the status quo an examination of NSBs organizational structure and organigram took place, coupled with a kickoff meeting and interviews conducted both within the client’s organization and with key stakeholders of zero2one. Based on the insights gained from the status quo analysis, secondary research in the form of a literature review was conducted. Additionally, we conducted standardized interviews with academic experts, advisory professionals, and corporate representatives.

Results

We developed a competence mapping framework built on our so-called “six-pillar-approach” to establish fundamental processes needed for the effective matching of existing competencies with leveraged knowledge. Mainly, the six pillars we identified are competencies, resources, opportunities, development, strategy, and rollout. Based on our best practice analysis and the gap analysis of five operational key areas we came up with a list of initiatives and strategic improvements that will allow zero2one to successfully screen for new opportunities and achieve growth by the creation of new ventures. In addition to that, we also made suggestions for the respective lead for each initiative, embedded in the main objective and sequential role of each pillar, which will enable our client to quickly identify strengths and competencies within its organization and across hierarchies.
