Finding promising and creative application fields for Austrian geospatial data processing company

01/02/2022

Wintersemester 2021-22 / Geoville

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Decision-making based on analysing statistical datasets is nowadays embedded into business practice across various sectors. However, currently available statistical datasets are past-oriented, which makes it challenging to exercise strategic business decisions. Thus, GeoVille, an international leader in providing geoinformation solutions, developed the product DemographEye in collaboration with World Data Lab. The product combines information based on high-resolution satellite imagery with official census data and details on the locations of different public facilities. Contingent on data availability, census data offer diverse socio-economic factors such as age, birth data, mortality rate, education, employment, etc. DemographEye offers forecasts, historic data points in the past, and outputs for the current year in resolution up to 25m x 25m. As it also offers the ability to incorporate additional customer data, it is a valuable tool for various purposes. Examples are demand and location planning as well as operational and strategic decision-making.

Goal

The main objective of the consultant research was to identify as many as possible application fields in which the DemographEye product and its service can be applied. To reach that goal an overall and better understanding of the product and its service was needed. Therefore, use benefits were identified so the project team was able to detect industries where the technology assists in the decision-making process. With help of use benefits, the project team pinpointed the challenges companies, scientists and NGOs encounter when executing strategic decisions.

Methodology

The project is conducted by employing the Technology Competence Leveraging (TCL) Method which guided each phase of the project. The TCL Method is an approach that navigates the path to analyse and identify new application fields for either existing or incremental innovation products/services. The first step was the identification of DemographEye’s use benefits. As a second step, with help of in total of four identified use benefits, twelve new application fields were detected. In the third step, the project team investigated these fields, by means of interviews and secondary research together with cross-questioning the user communities on diverse social platforms. The fourth and final step was thorough market research for three application fields chosen by the project partner.

Results

In total twelve application fields were detected, from which on three application fields thorough market research was conducted. A short overview of the application fields chosen is listed below in alphabetical order.

Branch management for banking industry

  • A bank branch is a physical location of a bank corporation, such as Raiffeisen Bank or Erste Bank Austria

  • Branch management for the banking industry is the process of analysing and calculating the demand for branches

  • DemographEye can assist banks to gather and analyse the data, thus identifying the right customer group

Evaluation of residential development

  • In order to evaluate properties, it is necessary to conduct detailed research on actual prices and further development of the property and its surroundings.

  • Digitalization made the real estate sector more dynamic and accessible, which lead to growing demand for data and predictions.

  • DemographEye can offer predictions about further development based on prices and demographic data. As there are already some established companies in this market, cooperation makes the most sense for GeoVille.

Locating groups for targeted offline marketing

  • Companies struggle to find and reach their target group offline effectively.

  • DemographEye can support the process of detecting and analysing various customer groups as well as finding the most profitable locations for offline marketing.

  • GeoVille can outperform the competition by offering predictions instead.
