EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Wastetracker is a Vienna based start-up with a software solution that aims to lower food waste based on Computer Vision technology. The solution uses a camera to detect food and drink leftovers and enables the customers such as canteens to reduce food waste, which creates financial benefits for them. Amidst the current climate crisis, Wastetrackers` solution can also be seen as an effective tool to reduce carbon emission created by excess food production. In addition, there will be regulations concerning food waste, which would make Wastetracker highly relevant for many food serving businesses.

Goal

This project focused on discovering the optimal fit between problem and solution for Wastetracker. The result was a comprehensive business plan demonstrating the product's potential and capabilities.

Methodology

In order to identify the target groups and to better understand their needs, secondary research as well as expert interviews were conducted. Moreover, competitors and industry analysis were made to illustrate the current development of the food waste reduction industry. The final business plan of Wastetracker contains essential information on these analysis such as SWOT analysis, marketing and an implementation plan. Additionally, a financial plan has also been devised to exhibit the profitability of Wastetracker.

Results

We have identified canteens as the main target group and have identified the main needs and problems considering food waste. Ultimately, the main goal of Wastetracker is to offer the solution to the entire food serving industry. Furthermore, we have also created a concept for an add-on solution that is meant to build strategic partnerships with the competitors. Regarding revenue streams, we see the subscription fees as the main income source.

Despite the growing market for food waste reduction solutions, there are already some existing market barriers. However, Wastetracker has existing relationships with established companies such as SAP that can be leveraged to overcome these barriers.
