Building the dream VR development team for FESTO LX

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Virtual reality has begun to penetrate every part of our lives. Based on this, FESTO Didactic aimed to become an innovative player in its industry by integrating VR into the FESTO LX product.

In this project, we researched the key points for setting up a dream team for FESTO LX. The professional qualifications of the candidates, the structure of the team, the roles that should be given in order to work in harmony were determined. After this stage, research for the acquisition strategies of the selected candidates was conducted. As a result of our research, we found out which core values the potential employees pay attention to. Further, we evaluated FESTO's position in these values and identified areas that are open to improvement.

Another part of the project was the selection of VR headsets to be used in schools. As a result of detailed market research, we have filtered the most successful products in the market and compared them in detail. As a result of all these comparisons, we have selected two products for FESTO LX VR and presented them to our project partner.

Goal

The overall objective of the project was to identify certain attributes and qualities that are needed in a VR development team and to provide specific suggestions and recommendations for composing a team. Another minor objective was the recommendation of a VR headset that could be sold to educational facilities. The overall objective could be split up into three subsidiary goals: outlining the skills and qualifications needed in a VR development team, designing an acquisition strategy and consulting on employer branding. 

Methodology

We implemented several methods to reach our goals. To start with we did a broad market research of the VR hardware market. The raw data from the market has been processed and simplified to a technical comparison table. Furthermore, we got in touch with more than 50 industry experts and conducted 10 interviews. To determine the important points of talent acquisition and employer branding strategies, we have conducted 4 interviews with human resource teams in the industry. Further, we have researched the literature and focused on the acquisition process of IT companies.

Results

The interviews gave a deeper insight into the composition of existing teams, which is why we provided FESTO Didactic with examples for specific team set-ups. These are always dependent on the certain project at hand. Recurring roles in teams were filtered and analyzed. Regarding the acquisition of talent, our team found out that the majority of VR developers value similar working conditions and benefits, like flexibility regarding working hours as well as the option of working from home. We also outlined the most important value propositions for FESTO LX and gave recommendations for improvements.
