Julia Litofcenko is a post-doc researcher at the Institutes for Nonprofit and Public Management and Governance at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Prior to this, she worked at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the field of sociology and as a statistician at the Institute for Empirical Social Research (IFES).

Her research interests focus on the role of civil society from a political science perspective. Using quantitative text analysis (natural language processing), she examines the extent to which civil society can contribute to improving democracy and the patterns of media coverage about social movements. Her dissertation on this topic was awarded the Stephan Koren Prize.

Another focus of her research are the mechanisms of organizational governance. She analyzes the conditions and effects of democratic structures in non-profit organizations, as well as the growing similarities between non-profit and for-profit actors.

In her teaching, Julia Litofcenko also focuses primarily on the topics of governance at the organizational and national level. She pursues an emancipatory didactic approach that focuses on the realities of her students' lives and their emotional and rational reflection skills. For this, she was awarded the WU Prize for Innovative Teaching 2024.
