The open-access article “The Many Indicators of Nonprofit Success as Seen by Nonprofit Leaders”

by Florentine Maier, Wenjuan Zheng, Christof Brandtner, and Leila Cornips has been recognized by Wiley as a “Top Viewed Article 2025,” as one of the most accessed articles from the 2024 volume of the journal Nonprofit Management & Leadership.

But how can we actually tell whether a nonprofit organization is successful? To answer this question, the study analyzes responses from leaders of 861 nonprofit organizations in Vienna, Shenzhen, and San Francisco. The surprising finding: despite all cultural differences, the notions of success are remarkably similar. Based on these findings, the authors develop a clear framework that also highlights two previously underestimated dimensions—namely, internal cohesion within an organization and the actual use of its services by the target group.
