Understanding the state of the enabling environment for philanthropy globally

Around the world, individuals support each other through formal and informal channels—within their countries and across borders. The Global Philanthropy Environment Index (GPEI) reveals the complex ecosystem of regulations, politics and cultures that influence global philanthropy. It assesses the environment for philanthropy by examining the incentives and barriers to giving in 95 countries. All country reports are publicly available and contain descriptions and assessments that enable comparisons to be made between countries, as well as changes within a country over time. Additionally, the results of the global study are summarised in 15 regional reports (e.g. for the Baltic States and Southern Europe, and Latin America) and one global report.

The GPEI is compiled at regular intervals by the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, in collaboration with philanthropy experts from the countries in question. Michaela Neumayr is responsible for the Austrian country report.
