IMSM supervises a small number of selected PhD students, who ideally have a strong interest in our key research areas and excellent quantitative skills.

Doing your PhD at IMSM will give you access to a vibrant and international faculty at the forefront of cutting-edge research. We aim to achieve excellence in research, which means that you will contribute to the scientific community by producing internationally competitive outputs for top journals in thefield.

You will be enrolled in WU's Doctoral/PhD program, which usually takes at least six semesters to complete. In the course of your studies, you attend courses, pass examinations, and write a dissertation.

WU’s PhD programs are mainly intended for the university's academic staff (i.e., teaching & research associates). The doctoral programs are intended for external students who are not working at WU. We publicly announce open positions for teaching & research associates on our website and social media channels as soon as they become available.

More information about WU’s PhD Program is available here.

Information about admission to a doctoral/PhD program is available under Application and Admission

Please note: At IMSM, we currently supervise internal PhD students only (i.e., research & teaching associates working @IMSM). This means that there must be an open position available at the Institute in order for you to be able to pursue a PhD with us. Thus, supervision of external students in the doctoral program is currently not possible.

Training our PhDs!

IMSM and the Department of Marketing offer three types of PhD seminars to support you in your research:

  1. Research seminar (docs@work) by IMSM that provides students with insights into contemporary research in the area of interactive marketing & social media;

  2. Research Seminar Series, in which students have the opportunity to meet visiting scholars from the world's top universities, learn about the field as a whole, and keep up-to-date with fresh knowledge and recent developments in the academic marketing community (check out more info here);

  3. PhD workshop, in which PhD/doctoral students present their work and get feedback from faculty and peers. This workshop is also intended to provide training opportunities for conferences.
