The Institute for Higher Education Management (IHM)

The In­sti­tute for Higher Edu­ca­tion Man­age­ment is part of the De­part­ment of Strategy and In­nov­a­tion at WU. IHM activ­it­ies in­clude re­search, teach­ing, policy ad­vising and ex­ternal en­gage­ment with dif­fer­ent stake­hold­ers, as well as in­volve­ment in in­ter­na­tional as­so­ci­ations. Areas of in­terest at IHM com­bine the­or­ies of busi­ness and man­age­ment ap­plied to the com­plex or­gan­iz­a­tion of uni­versit­ies. With this fo­cus, IHM provides in­sights for higher edu­ca­tion schol­ars and prac­ti­tion­ers but also bey­ond that for re­search and prac­tice in­ter­ested in ex­pert and non­profit or­gan­iz­a­tional set­tings.

The­or­et­ical Ap­proach

Work at IHM con­trib­utes to the in­ter­dis­cip­lin­ary and in­ter­na­tional higher edu­ca­tion re­search com­munity. Dis­cip­lines in­clude busi­ness and man­age­ment, eco­nom­ics, so­ci­ology, and polit­ical science. Em­pir­ical work plays a ma­jor role at IHM.

Rel­ev­ance to Prac­tice

Based on 13 years of man­age­ment ex­per­i­ence of Pro­fessor Sporn as Vice-Rector of WU, IHM of­fers ex­pert­ise as part of WU’s aca­demic pro­grams, in re­search, and for con­sult­ing and ad­vising. The motto „prac­tice what you preach“ serves as a guid­ing prin­ciple when of­fer­ing know-how in the fol­low­ing areas:

Teach­ing

On the bach­elor and mas­ter level courses are offered for reg­u­lar and ex­change stu­dents. 

Dis­ser­ta­tions in the area of higher edu­ca­tion man­age­ment re­lat­ing to the fo­cus of IHM are wel­come.

Im­pact

The area of higher edu­ca­tion re­search of­fers many op­por­tun­it­ies to com­bine re­search and prac­tice. Col­lab­or­a­tion with act­ors in the field like e.g. min­is­tries, science coun­cils, uni­versit­ies, re­search-­fund­ing agen­cies are part of IHM activ­it­ies.

In­ter­na­tion­al­iz­a­tion

The in­ter­na­tion­al­iz­a­tion of uni­versit­ies in gen­eral and busi­ness school in par­tic­u­lar is a core com­pet­ence of IHM. Through ex­tens­ive ex­per­i­ence with ac­cred­it­a­tions like EQUIS or AACSB and with rank­ings such as FT Busi­ness School Rank­ing or Mul­tiR­ank, IHM can serve as a com­pet­ent part­ner.
