The Institute for Higher Education Management (IHM)
The Institute for Higher Education Management is part of the Department of Strategy and Innovation at WU. IHM activities include research, teaching, policy advising and external engagement with different stakeholders, as well as involvement in international associations. Areas of interest at IHM combine theories of business and management applied to the complex organization of universities. With this focus, IHM provides insights for higher education scholars and practitioners but also beyond that for research and practice interested in expert and nonprofit organizational settings.
Work at IHM contributes to the interdisciplinary and international higher education research community. Disciplines include business and management, economics, sociology, and political science. Empirical work plays a major role at IHM.
Relevance to Practice
Based on 13 years of management experience of Professor Sporn as Vice-Rector of WU, IHM offers expertise as part of WU’s academic programs, in research, and for consulting and advising. The motto „practice what you preach“ serves as a guiding principle when offering know-how in the following areas:

Research management including funding and libraries
On the bachelor and master level courses are offered for regular and exchange students.
Dissertations in the area of higher education management relating to the focus of IHM are welcome.
The area of higher education research offers many opportunities to combine research and practice. Collaboration with actors in the field like e.g. ministries, science councils, universities, research-funding agencies are part of IHM activities.
The internationalization of universities in general and business school in particular is a core competence of IHM. Through extensive experience with accreditations like EQUIS or AACSB and with rankings such as FT Business School Ranking or MultiRank, IHM can serve as a competent partner.
