In contrast to web conferencing tools such as MS Teams or Zoom, virtual teaching and learning spaces allow people to be embodied in the form of avatars in a three-dimensional environment. All actors - learners and teachers - are in this virtual environment at the same time and together, can move around in it and interact in a variety of ways.

The strengths of virtual teaching and learning spaces are:

• The shared synchronous presence in the virtual space and the sense of community

• The interaction and activity, i.e. the possibility of group formation, exchange and meeting as well as active participation

• The possibility of incorporating virtual objects that are hardly available in the real world

Virtual teaching and learning spaces can be accessed low-threshold via browser on computer or mobile devices. Access via VR glasses is also possible and allows a deeper immersion in the virtual environments.
