Recommendations for teachers, school administrators, and parents or guardians for the successful prevention of school absenteeism and dropout rates

Newly published and available for download on the website of the Arbeiterkammer Wien [Vienna Chamber of Labor]:

Executive Summary of the 2nd, updated and expanded edition

Early school leaving carries high risks for both those affected and society as a whole and should therefore be avoided at all costs. However, even after successfully completing school, students may have developed an aversion to school and learning that can have a negative impact on their future lives and their ability to cope with problems at work. The recommendations for action are intended to support teachers and learners in establishing a willingness to engage in lifelong learning. The main target group for these recommendations for action is teaching staff and school administrators, but they can provide valuable information for all those involved in and interested in school processes (students, parents or guardians, local communities, and the general public). Some recommendations are explicitly aimed at parents or guardians, without whose involvement effective dropout prevention is difficult to achieve.

Through intensive research in international educational research and knowledge fields, preventive and intervention measures against school dropout and school disengagement were identified and critically evaluated in terms of their usefulness in schools. High-quality individual studies from other countries were selected and analyzed for the specific purpose of developing recommendations for action. The catalog of measures now available contains 69 recommendations for action with detailed steps that can be tested both individually and in combination. Based on the specific practical field, various ways of improving the situation are selected. In this way, unlike fixed programs, greater flexibility, individualization, and autonomy in action can be achieved.
