Mehmet Ali Icbay is a teaching and research associate in the Department of Business Communication at Vienna University of Economics and Business. His work focuses on ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, and ethnography, with a particular interest in intercultural communication in professional and institutional settings. Before joining WU Vienna, Icbay held research and teaching positions at institutions including Middle East Technical University, The Ohio State University, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. His research has been supported by funding bodies such as the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Irish Health Research Board (HRB), and Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK).
Icbay’s recent projects include workplace violence against healthcare workers, conflict resolution in referee decision-making, the EMCA community, and laughter in institutional settings. His latest project proposal, based on ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, and ethnography, will explore the role of intercultural communication in shaping the Vienna 2030 strategy to transform Vienna into a leading healthcare metropolis. His work has been published in leading international journals, including Classroom Discourse, Medicine, Conflict & Survival, Humor, and Talk & Text. At WU Vienna, he contributes to research and teaching in intercultural business communication, focusing on language and interaction in multilingual workplaces, workplace adaptation strategies of professionals in international organizations, and the impact of digital communication on professional collaboration across cultures.
