Josef Alfred Mazanec, born 1947 in Vienna, Austria; married, two children.

Education/degrees:

primary school (1953-1957) and secondary school (Gymnasium, 1957-1965) in Vienna, Abitur cum laude (1965); studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU Wien); diploma (Diplomkaufmann, 1969), Dr. rer. comm. (1972); venia docendi for business administration (January 1979), full professor of business administration in tourism (February 1981).

Academic/professional experience:

assistant professor at the Institute of Advertising and Market Research (WU); consultant of the National Advertising Agency Organisation, Austrian delegate to the European Association of Advertising Agencies (EAAA) 1971-1981; head of the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Studies (WU) since 1981; visiting scholar at the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge MA, 1992; board member of the Association Internationale d'Experts Scientifiques du Tourisme (AIEST) 1984-1994, member of the Tourist Research Centre, founding member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST), member of the Travel & Tourism Research Association, the American Marketing Association, and the American Marketing Academy; Vice-President of the Austrian Society of Applied Research in Tourism (1981-1997); associate editor of the Annals of Tourism Research, editor for Europe of Tourism Analysis (1996-2000), editorial board member of Tourism Economics, the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, the Journal of Modelling in Management, and the Journal für Betriebswirtschaft; chief coordinator of the Special Research Program (SFB010) on 'Adaptive Systems and Modelling in Economics and Management Science' (1997-2000); Vice-Rector for Research (1997-2002).

Main research interests:

hospitality and tourism management, models of consumer & tourist behavior, strategic marketing and strategic planning, multivariate methods and neurocomputing, decision support systems, management science applications to travel & tourism.

Business consulting:

the list of clients comprises the Department of Economic Affairs and most of the Provincial Governments, the Federal Chamber of Commerce, the Austrian National Tourist Office, the Austrian National Travel Agency, Austrian Airlines, Hilton International, various tourist resorts, NTOs, educational and research institutes.
