Remunicipalization as an expansion of urban scope for action

Research field: Cities in the Context of European Integration and Globalisation

Since the 2010s, there has been a growing trend towards remunicipalisation in many areas of public services. Remunicipalisation offers an opportunity, particularly in the public services sector, to redefine the division of roles between the state and the private sector as needed, thereby responding to undesirable developments or changes in citizens’ preferences and values. In the context of current geopolitical developments and geo-economic tensions, the question of what can be done at the local level is particularly important. Remunicipalisation can play a key role here in two ways. Firstly, with regard to security of supply, which has become increasingly important since the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondly, it is important in terms of the socio-ecological transformation, in which cities and municipalities play an important role. The project focuses primarily on the latter aspect and examines the potential of remunicipalisation as a means of achieving socio-ecological transformation.
