Salary benchmark of NPOs 2022/2023

In 2023, the NPO Competence Center is conducting a salary benchmark for nonprofit organisations for the sixth time, and there are many good reasons to participate: Developments that have a significant impact on the labour market, such as the shortage of skilled workers and inflation, do not stop at NPOs.

Background on the NPO salary benchmark:
The aim of the study is to collect and compare concrete business-relevant data on the remuneration of employees in Austrian nonprofit organisations, for which different hierarchical levels and functional areas of different nonprofit organisations are taken into account in the form of a benchmark. The following nine hierarchical positions are used to compare remuneration based on predefined criteria:

  •     P1: Executive directors

  •     P2: Division or department heads

  •     P3: Team leaders

  •     P4: Specialists

  •     P5: Self-responsible employees plus

  •     P6: Self-responsible employees

  •     P7: Self-responsible employees in the training phase

  •     P8: General assistants

  •     P9: Interns

Furthermore, there is a differentiation according to nine different functional areas:

  •     F1: General Management & Cross Functional

  •     F2: Programmes - operational

  •     F3: Programmes - strategic

  •     F4: Finance

  •     F5: Human Resources

  •     F6: IT

  •     F7: fundraising

  •     F8: marketing

  •     F9: Communication

The results are presented in the form of salary tables for each position and relevant functional area, showing the lowest and highest salary, as well as 25th/50th/75th percentile and mean. In addition, differences in salaries are shown based on various organisational characteristics (size of organisation, predominantly donor-funded organisations compared to others).

In addition to salaries, key figures such as turnover, sick leave and training rates as well as wage spread will be collected and compared.

The data collection is planned for February to May 2023. Only those organisations that participate in the study will receive the report.
