Emphasis in Teaching
Emphases in Teaching
Teaching at the Department of Management has a long tradition of being creative, forward‑thinking, and innovative. We place great value on providing our students not only with broad foundational knowledge, but also with strong personal and technical skills.
More detailed information can be found on the individual institute pages, but we would like to highlight the following key aspects.
Bachelor level
At the bachelor level we are engaged in multiple course, programs, and specializations:
Within the Common Body of Knowledge at WU (CBK I), the Department of Management offers the course Personnel Management, Leadership, Organizational Behavior I (PFO). Thousands of students take this course each year, and it plays a particularly important role as it ensures a broad foundation of cognitive and conceptual knowledge. This introductory course is complemented by Personnel Management, Leadership, Organizational Behavior II, the lecture Social Skills (offered in the Bachelor’s programs Business Law and Business, Economics and Social Sciences—majors Business Administration, Economics and Socio‑Economics, and Information Systems), as well as the Social Skills enrichment workshops, which are developed and conducted in cooperation with all institutes of the Department.
Within the Common Body of Knowledge at WU (CBK I), four departments jointly offer the course Cross-Functional Business Administration - Processes and Decisions (FuB): the Department of Management, the Department of Marketing, the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, and the Department of Global Business and Trade. As a mandatory course in the first study phase, FuB reaches a large share of each student cohort and lays the groundwork for an integrated, process-oriented understanding of the firm. The course combines lectures with exercises, including a computer-based business simulation, across four thematic areas: management, marketing, operations management, and transport and logistics. Students thereby learn to think across functional areas, understand trade-offs, and consider different stakeholder perspectives.
Offered as part of the Bachelor in Business and Economics (BBE) degree, the Managing Organisations and People (MO&P) course is a collaboration between the Department of Management and the Department of Global Business and Trade. MO&P is a core course in the BBE programme, and is usually taken by students during their 4th-6th semesters. Designed to equip students with an understanding of the contemporary issues and challenges facing managers and organisations, the course combines perspectives from organisational behaviour and international business to examine how organisations are structured, the factors influencing individual and group behaviour, and the ways in which people and organisations are managed across diverse contexts. Topics covered include organisational structure and design, individual behaviour within organisations, decision making, organisational culture, cross-cultural management, global trends, and international business environments.
