Manuella van der Put is a senior judge in Civil law and Criminal law at the court of  ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Previously she was a corporate lawyer/ secretary of the board of directors in healthcare, lawyer and managing partner at various law firms specializing in Labor law, Company law and Health law.

In May 2022 she completed her PhD at Tilburg University, title of dissertation: "Artificial Intelligence in Judicial Decision-Making: Theoretical Analysis and Practical Implementation." The research contributes to the debate on the possibilities of using AI in legal proceedings and provides design requirements for AI systems to be used within the judiciary.

As part of this PhD, in collaboration with Tilburg University and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science ‘s-Hertogenbosch, a decision-support system for minor traffic offences was developed and tested as a pilot. The conclusion of this pilot was that AI can be used in the process of judicial decision by improving efficiency and timely administration of justice. This tool is now being further developed to be implemented in the process of judicial decision-making.
