Claudia Müller-Birn is the head of the Human-Centered Computing (HCC) research group at the Institute for Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin. She is also a member of the Executive Board of the Ada Lovelace Center for Digital Humanities and a Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Prior to joining Freie Universität Berlin, Claudia was a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science, supported by a Feodor Lynen Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In her interdisciplinary research projects, she focuses on human-computer collaborations, aiming to find ways to integrate humans and algorithms more closely in meaningful interactions.

Her research is driven by the observation that current user interface design often prioritizes producers' values instead of users'. Her current research investigates user interfaces that enable humans to make informed decisions in the context of data donation (known as privacy-preserving decision-making) and medical decision-making in data-driven systems. This is achieved through visual and interactive explanations of the underlying privacy-preserving technology or the machine learning models used. She integrates approaches and methods from human-computer interaction, collaborative computing, human-centered design, and behavioral research. She advocates for using and developing open-source software, the principles of open science, and open access to scholarly knowledge.
