Morning Talk with Prof. Yan "Anthea" Zhang

We were thrilled to welcome Prof. Yan "Anthea" Zhang as a guest speaker in our Female Scholar program.

Dr. Yan “Anthea” Zhang is a professor and the Fayez Sarofim Vanguard Chair of Strategic Management at the Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University. She joined Rice University in July 2001 and has taught all programs offered by the Jones Graduate School of Business: Day-Time MBA, Professional MBA, Executive MBA, On-line MBA (MBA@Rice), and Ph.D. program.

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on CEO succession and corporate governance of public-listed companies and family firms, foreign direct investments, and technological entrepreneurship. She has published extensively on these topics in leading academic journals, such as Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of International Business Studies, among others. Her research has been cited in top business media outlets such as Harvard Business Review, Economist, Business Week, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, and Financial Times. She has published a co-authored book on managerial succession in family-owned businesses in China. She has served as an associate editor of Academy of Management Journal and Strategic Management Journal and now is an area editor of Journal of International Business Studies.

Dr. Zhang is President of Strategic Management Society (SMS), the leading international association for strategy scholars. Prior to becoming President of SMS, Dr. Zhang had served on the board of SMS for eight years. She has also served on the board of directors of the International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS) (https://icgsociety.org/https://icgsociety.org/) for three years.

She received her Ph.D. degree in business administration from the University of Southern California (USC), Master of Philosophy degree in international business from City University of Hong Kong, and BA and MA degrees in economics from Nanjing University, China.

Dr. Zhang's talk focused on mastering challenges along different career phases, managing a pipeline of research projects and work-life balance in academia.

Morning Talk with Prof. Caterina Moschieri

We were delighted to have Prof. Caterina Moschieri as a speaker for the Female Scholar Program.

Caterina Moschieri is an Associate Professor (tenured) at IE Business School in Madrid. Her teaching and research focus on Corporate and Competitive Strategy. Her research interests span from mergers and acquisitions to spin-offs to organizational design. Caterina holds a PhD in General Management, with a specialization in Strategy from IESE Business School, and graduate degree in economics from Bocconi University, Italy. She has been a visiting scholar at Insead Paris and Luiss Rome.

Caterina’s research has been presented at several conferences and institutions around the world. Her work has been published in academic outlets, such as the Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Management, the Journal of Management Studies, the Journal of World Business and more, and broader-audience outlets, such as the Sloan MIT Management Review, the Financial Times and Forbes.  

Her research has been featured or cited, and has received several awards and prizes, including national grants from the Portuguese and the Spanish governments. 

Caterina sits on the editorial review board of the Journal of Management Studies, the Academy of Management Discoveries, the Academy of Management Perspective. She is co-editor for Strategic Organization. 

Caterina shared her view and experience on the topic of career evolution for female scholars.

Morning Talk with Prof. Christine Shropshire

In November we had the pleasure of hosting a Female Scholar Program event with Prof. Christine Shropshire.

Christine Shropshire is Associate Professor of Management & Entrepreneurship in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, where she is also a Fellow of the New Governance Lab. Prior to joining ASU, she was Associate Professor at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.

Christy’s research interests are broadly in the area of corporate governance, including board composition and effectiveness, diversity in the upper echelons, and stakeholder management. Her research seeks to understand strategic decision-making processes and outcomes among individuals and groups at the top of organizations. Among other outlets, her work has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, Organization Science,and Strategic Management Journal. In addition, her researchhas been featured inthe Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes, New York Times and on National Public Radio. In addition to currently serving as Associate Editor at Academy of Management Review, Christy sits on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal and was an Associate Editor at Business & Society 2020-2023.

Prior to academia, she worked in Human Capital consulting, assisting corporate boards and executives and serving domestic and international clients in a variety of industries including healthcare and financial services.

Christy spoke to our Female Scholars about career milestones - the cadence of finishing a PhD program, progress toward tenure & promotion, service opportunities - and furthermore touched upon managing the research pipeline and changing institutions.

Morning Talk with Prof. Claudia Jonczyk, PhD

Prof. Claudia Jonczyk opened this semester's Female Scholar program with a delightful Morning Talk on networking, gender and international careers.

Claudia Jonczyk holds the Chair of Strategic Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Neuchâtel since 2018. She is the current Director of the Institute of Management and Vice Dean of faculty. In her research, she studies social capital and networks as well as question of identity adaptation of expatriates and how service professionals manage their careers. Her research has been published in leading academic journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Academy of Management Discoveries and the Journal of Vocational Behavior as well as in practitioner outlets and case studies.

Before joining the University of Neuchâtel, Claudia Jonczyk has been a Professor of Management at ESCP Business School in London and a visiting researcher at INSEAD and MIT’s Sloan School. Professor Jonczyk holds a PhD from the University of Geneva and a Master and Bachelor from the University of St. Gallen. 

In her talk she shared her views and some practical insights from her research on networks, gender and careers as well as some reflections into managing an international academic career.

Morning Talk with Prof. Floor Rink

We were very excited to have our first in-person morning talk with Prof. Floor Rink on November 24, 2022 since the beginning of the pandemic. 

Floor Rink is full professor at the faculty of Economics and Business from the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), where she is the research director of the Organizational Behavior department.

Floor applies psychology theory to explain people’s responses to organizational and economic phenomena. She uses both quantitative and qualitative methods in her research (e.g., surveys, experiments, ESM, archival data, case studies). Floor’s two main areas of expertise are; (1) issues related to social inequality (e.g. diversity, status and power dynamics, identity processes) and (2) strategic leadership and governance (e.g., CEO/board decision making, ethics). Her findings have been published in academic journals like the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Psychological Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes & the Academy of Management Annals.

Floor's work received recognition from several (inter) national scientific associations (e.g., SOM research Institute, the American Psychology Association and the Academy of Management), and obtained funding from multiple agencies (e.g., the Dutch Science Foundation, the Dutch Central Bank). To help bridge science and practice, Floor regularly shares her findings with the media, gives public speeches, and provides strategic management advice to executive and non-executive board members.

Floor received her master in Psychology from the University of Groningen, and her PhD at Leiden University (with distinction, 2005). She held visiting positions at Kellogg School of Management and Exeter University and is currently a research affiliate of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at the Australian National University (ANU).

Floor served as an Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Journal from 2019 to 2022. She will continue this role in the new editorial team (2022-2025), with a specific emphasis on transparency and cross-boundary research.

Webinar with Prof. Dr. Christine Beckman

We started off our winter semester 2022 with a webinar with Prof. Dr. Christine Beckman, Price Family Chair in Social Innovation and Professor at the USC Price School of Public Policy, USC, CA, USA.

Christine Beckman is the Price Family Chair in Social Innovation and Professor at the USC Price School of Public Policy, with courtesy appointments at the Marshall School of Business and in the Department of Sociology. Her recent book, Dreams of the Overworked: Living, Working and Parenting in the Digital Age (Stanford University Press), is an ethnographic account of the pre-COVID challenges of working parents and their aspirations to be Ideal Workers, Perfect Parents and Ultimate Bodies. She and her co-author, Melissa Mazmanian, highlight how technology intensifies these myths of perfection, celebrates the people who actually do the work of scaffolding the dreams of those around them, and reveals the hidden sources of gender inequality in everyday life. She is the current Editor in Chief at Administrative Science Quarterly. She is a past Division Chair of the Organization and Management Division at AOM. 

Prof. Beckman shared her view on Managing Work and Life in the Digital Age.

Webinar with Prof. Dr. Varesca van de Vrande

We were delighted to have Prof. Dr. van de Vrande in our first Female Scholar Program Webinar in the year 2022. 

Prof. Dr. Varesca van de Vrande is a Full Professor of Collaborative Innovation and Business Venturing at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. She joined the RSM in 2007 after completing a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Her expertise focuses on the areas of corporate venturing and collaborative innovation, including external technology sourcing, corporate venture capital investments, strategic alliances, and corporate-startup collaboration. Other research interests include (corporate) entrepreneurship, patents, and venture capital. She publishes her work regularily in renown journals and teaches courses and modules in Strategic Management and Corporate Venturing at the graduate and post-experience level at the RSM.

She presented her view on the following topic:

“Building an academic career: The female advantage”

Webinar with Prof. Dr. Jana Oehmichen

We ended this Female Scholar Program year with an very interesting webinar on December 9, 2021 with 

Prof. Dr. Jana Oehmichen

Head of the Institute for Organization, Human Resources and Management Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. 

She is a Full Professor of Organization, Human Resources, and Management Studies at the JGU Mainz. In her research, she is interested in corporate governance, incentive systems, board composition, ownership structure, strategic change, and digital strategy.

Webinar with Prof. Dr. Deborah Schanz

In the end of June 2021 we had a very interesting webinar with Prof. Dr. Deborah Schanz from the LMU Munich.

Deborah Schanz talked about the following topics:

• creating visibility outside the academic community

• reflecting on one’s own role in a male dominated environment

• recruiting and empowering young female scientists

Webinar with Dr. Susann Fiedler on November 11th 2020

In November 2020 we had an interesting talk withDr. Susann Fiedler,Head of the Research group on Cognitive Processes Underlying Economic Decision Making (funded by the Max Planck Society and the Gielen-Leyendecker Foundation).

Dr. Fiedler received her Doctor in Psychology and could gain a lot of working experiences in Germany and in the US. Since 2014 she is Head of the Gielen-Leyendecker Research Group.

She offered very helpful insights and tips on the following topics: "Working in an interdisciplinary institute", "Building up a research group", & "Work climate in academia"

Webinar with Prof. Tina C. Ambos on October 8th 2020

We started the Winter semester with an exciting webinar with Prof. Tina C. Ambos (University of Geneva) who shared her experience with managing international academic careers.

Tina C. Ambos is Professor of International Management and the Director of the i2i Hub for Intrapreneurship and Innovation.  Before joining the University of Geneva, she was a professor at the University of Sussex and the management faculty's Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange. Earlier she held the chair of the Department of International Management at Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria), as well as positions at WU Vienna, the University of Edinburgh and London Business School. She received a Venia Docendi (Habilitation) and a Ph.D. from WU Vienna. Tina’s research and teaching interests include global strategic management and innovation in the context of multinational corporations, technology start-ups and international (non-for-profit) organizations. Her research in this field is regularly presented at the leading conferences and has been published in top international academic as well as practitioner journals.

Tina also served as Associate Editor for Long Range Planning from 2015-2018 and is a member of the Consulting Editors Board of the Journal of International Business Studies and the editorial review boards of Management International Review, Journal of International Management, Global Strategy Journal and Long Range Planning.

Webinar with Prof. Cynthia Devers

At the end of a great September, we had an interesting afternoon talk with Prof. Cynthia Devers.

Cynthia Devers talked about two very important topics:

- How to successfully negotiate as female scholar - best practices for negotiation in academic settings, and

- How to get your seat at the table as a woman in a male-dominated department  - securing your fair share in the resource allocation process.

Webinar with Prof. Jennifer Petriglieri on July 13th, 2020

We kicked off the summer holidays hosting an exciting webinar with Prof. Jennifer Petriglieri.

Jennifer Petriglieri is an Associate Professor of organizational behaviour at INSEAD, where she directs the Women Leaders Programme, the INSEAD Gender Diversity Programme and the Management Acceleration Programme for executives. As an expert in leadership and careers she publishes her scholarly work in top academic journals including the Administrative Science Quarterly and the Academy of Management Review. She is the author of Couples That Work, an acclaimed book about what it takes for working couples to thrive in their careers and their relationships. She was shortlisted for the Talent award in 2019 by Thinkers50, the ranking of the most influential management authors in the world.

In the webinar, Prof. Pertriglieri drew insights from her research and her personal experience about what it takes to thrive in an academic career while maintaining healthy non work relationships and a family.

Webinar with Prof. Fabiola Gerpott on June 23rd, 2020

Even Covid-19 cannot stop female scholars from connecting and supporting each other. Hence we welcomed Prof. Fabiola Gerpott for our first webinar.

Prof. Fabiola Gerpott is a Full Professor and Chair of Leadership at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management where she is passionate about studying the micro-dynamics of leadership and learning in organizations to de-velop actionable behavioral insights on how to improve Human Resource Management. Her research has been published in leading journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Learning & Education, and Journal of Personality & Social Psychology.

Prof. Gerpott shared her insights on developing one’s career at the intersection between disciplines and the problem that on the one hand, aspiring scholars are keen to sharpen their profile and “stand for something”, while on the other hand, the young researcher does not want to be labeled as a “blinkered specialist”.
Some of the main questions she covered where:
- How much depth versus breath should scientists cover in their research area(s)?
- What helps to remain focused in the daily life as a researcher?
- How can you organize your work more effectively and avoid getting trapped in the multitasking pitfall?

Morning Chat with Prof. Dr. Nadine Kammerlander on November 28th, 2019

While the weather at the end of November looked pretty bleak we were able to welcome Prof. Kammerlander for an enlightning morning chat with our junior female scholars.

Nadine Kammerlander was appointed as chaired professor of the Institute of Family Business at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in November 2015. There she co-founded the "Institute of Family Business and Mittelstand". Her research and teaching focus is on innovation and governance in family businesses and family offices as well as on social entrepreneurship. Her research has won numerous national and international awards, including the "Top 40 under 40" award in 2018. Prior to her time at WHU, she worked as an assistant professor at the University of St. Gallen. Nadine Kammerlander holds a degree in physics (TU Munich) and a doctorate in business administration (Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg). She worked for McKinsey & Company for several years and advised international companies in the automotive and semiconductor industries on product development projects. Professor Kammerlander was a member of the Supervisory Board of INDUS Holding AG until 2018. She is married and mother of three boys.

Afternoon Chat with Prof. Dr. Miriam Flickinger on October 10th, 2019

At this years' first event of the winter semester we welcomed Prof. Dr. Miriam Flickinger. She is a Full Professor at the Department of Management at Aarhus University. Her research interests are in the areas of behavioral strategy, organization theory, and corporate governance. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of Management Inquiry, Human Resource Management Journal, the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Review of Managerial Science, and the Journal of Management & Governance. Before joining Aarhus University in 2017, she was employed at LMU University of Munich and the University of Passau. She was also a visiting scholar at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and worked as a strategy consultant for BASF SE. Beginning in January 2020, Prof. Flickinger will head the Chair for Organization at Freie Universität Berlin.

Prof. Dr. Flickinger shared her insights on international academic career development. She reflected on her own career which included junior and senior academic and industry positions in Germany, Denmark, and the U.S. Furthermore, she spoke about her experience as Deputy Section Head at Aarhus University’s Department of Management in which she was the responsible manager of the section’s 32 junior researchers. Finally, Prof. Flickinger pointed out important differences in career development between different countries.

We thank Prof. Flickinger for sharing her experiences with our junior female scholars and taking the time to answer all their questions.

Afternoon Talk with Prof. Randi Lunnan on November 23rd, 2018

It was a pleasure to us welcoming Prof. Lunnan for an afternoon talk at the end of November.

Randi Lunnan is professor of Strategy and serves as Head of the Strategy and Entrepreneurship Department at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway. Her research interests include Inter-organizational relations and the management of multinationals. She is particularly interested in serial acquirers, alliance management and the performance of alliances over time, headquarters functions and the relation between subsidiaries and headquarters. Her work has been published in journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of World Business, Journal of Management and Journal of Management Studies. Randi Lunnan has broad international experience, and teaches MBA programs regularly in Oslo and Shanghai.

Here is what Prof. Lunnan had in mind for this event: “In this talk I would like to share my story, emphasizing learning points generated from the journey towards both an academic career as well as a career in university administration. The talk will end with discussion points raising dilemmas and issues related to career advancement in general, but particularly targeting a female academic audience. I look forward to the discussion with you.”

“Afternoon Tea Chat” on April 16th, 2018

At the „Afternoon Tea Chat“ Prof. Whited answered junior female scholar's questions and gave many interesting insights into her academic career.

She discussed how she had to deal with challenges in her field and how she successfully transitioned from economics to finance. She particularly addressed questions about her career as a woman in academia. Prof. Whited also talked about her experience as an editor and gave tips on how to publish in leading journals.
