Innovative Teaching Training: Teach-R Enables the Simulation of Classroom Situations

07/09/2026

During the summer semester of 2026, business education students were able to practice realistic feedback scenarios in a virtual classroom for the first time

The VR training environment Teach-R offers the opportunity to practice situations for which there is insufficient time in a typical classroom setting. Originally developed at the University of Potsdam, Teach-R was adapted at WU for the course “Accounting Pedagogy” to enable students to practice feedback situations individually as well.

Under the direction of Ingrid Dobrovits and Christiane Schopf, the application was used in three courses and was also scientifically evaluated through a master’s thesis to assess the developed scenario. Approximately 40 students took on the role of teachers in VR and discussed the solutions to a pre-assigned task with virtual students. The virtual avatars were controlled via a website and responded with task-specific audio responses—such as comprehension questions or intentionally incorrect solutions.

Another session took place in Michael Posch’s course “Methods of Business Education II.” Here, the focus was on classroom management and dealing with disruptions in the classroom. In the virtual classroom setting, students were able to try out different approaches and immediately experience how their decisions affected the course of the lesson.

The students were highly motivated to use the VR simulation to improve their teaching skills in a practical way.
