04/11/2019

The title Researcher of the Month is awarded every month as a special recognition and appreciation of the research achievements of the distinguished person.

Savings, investments, loans – these are topics that, in some way or another, concern every one of us. Our November Researcher of the Month looks at these and related topics from a scientific perspective: Christian Wagner is professor at WU’s Institute for Finance, Banking and Insurance.

A native of Vienna, Christian Wagner earned his doctoral degree at WU in 2006, and then went on to work as a bank auditor at the OeNB, the Austrian central bank. In the summer of 2008, Christian Wagner returned to WU as an assistant professor. In 2012, he became an associate professor at Copenhagen Business School, and in October 2018, he was appointed full professor of finance at WU’s Department of Finance, Accounting and Statistics.

In his research, Christian Wagner looks at questions related to asset pricing, the role of derivatives in shaping investor expectations, and the effects of central banks’ monetary policies on financial markets. Christian Wagner has successfully published his research results in internationally renowned journals such as the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial Economics. He has received a number of awards in recognition of his research achievements, including the Stephan Koren Prize, the ÖVFA Kapitalmarktpreis award, and the Western Finance Association’s Best Paper Award.

In his research video, Christian Wagner talks about the communications of the European Central Bank and explains why it’s important to focus not only on what is being said but also on how it’s being said. Enjoy!
