03/06/2024

Summer Term 2023 / OMV

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The OMV Group is Austria’s largest listed industrial company with a history of more than 60 years. The company focuses on three business segments along the hydrocarbon value chain: Chemicals & Materials, Energy and Fuels & Feedstock. The project focused on identifying application fields for a by-product of a proprietary chemical recycling technology.

Goal

The aim of the cooperation between OMV Downstream GmbH and the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation was to identify prospective application fields, commercial partners and logistical challenges.

Method

The method employed in this project was User Community-based Technological Competence Leveraging (TCL), a novel approach used to identify and evaluate alternative fields of application for existing technologies. The methodology consisted of the following core steps, which were adapted to the specific requirements of the project:

Phase 1: Identification of Use Benefits

Phase 2: Identification of New Application Fields

Phase 3: Evaluation of Application Fields

Phase 4: Detailed Evaluation of Selected Application Fields

Applications were identified through a series of interviews as well as secondary research. Further, tools such as SWOT analysis and Porter’s Five Forces were used to evaluate the identified application fields.

Results

The application of the TCL method resulted in the identification and evaluation of 10 promising application fields emphasizing the respective industries’ benefits, limitations, risks, target market size, and value. Based on the outcome, the project team compiled and presented a set of strategic recommendations to the project partner.
